How Many Patches Should You Order the First Time?

"What's your minimum order?" is one of the first questions we get, and the honest answer is a little unsatisfying: there isn't a hard cutoff, but there's a practical one, and it matters more than most people realize before their first order.

Why 25 pieces is the real floor

Digitizing your design into a production-ready file costs roughly the same whether you're making 10 patches or 250 — someone still has to convert your artwork into stitch paths, set up the production run, and check the first piece off the line. That fixed cost gets spread across however many patches come out the other end, which is why the per-piece price drops so sharply as quantity goes up and why very small runs (under 25) rarely make financial sense even though we can usually accommodate them.

Below 25, you're not getting a "discount for buying less" — you're just paying the fixed setup cost across fewer pieces, so the per-patch price often ends up higher than the 25-piece tier by a wide margin. If you only need a handful, ask directly — we'll tell you the real number rather than quietly making the small order painful.

What the curve actually looks like

Here's embroidered patch pricing across our standard tiers, which is a fair representative example of how quantity affects price across every patch type:

QuantityPrice per patchTotal
25 pcs$2.65$66.25
50 pcs$2.15$107.50
100 pcs$1.75$175.00
250 pcs$1.35$337.50

Notice the jump from 25 to 50 patches only adds about $41 in total cost but nearly doubles your quantity — that's the steepest part of the curve, and it's where most first-time buyers get the most value per dollar spent.

So how many should you actually order?

It depends on what you're ordering for, but a few rules of thumb hold up well:

  • Testing a new product or drop: 50–100 is usually the sweet spot — enough to hit a meaningfully better price tier without committing to inventory you might need to redesign later.
  • A team or school roster: order for your actual headcount plus a 10–15% buffer for new members joining mid-season or replacement patches — see our full guide for teams and schools for the season-budgeting math.
  • A one-off gift or personal project: if you genuinely only need a handful, say so on your quote request — we'll quote it honestly rather than pushing you toward a bigger run you don't need.
  • An established, reordering brand: 250+ is usually where it's worth locking in, since the per-piece savings compound every time you reorder using the same digitized design.
The real mistake isn't ordering too few or too many — it's not asking. Tell us what you're actually going to do with the patches (sell them, hand them out, put them on a specific number of jackets) and we'll recommend a quantity instead of just quoting whatever number you typed in.
